Prescott, AZ 2003
Summary
Prescott, Arizona: October 2003
I've been living in Santa Barbara since February of 1997. When I first
moved to Santa Barbara, I found the city to be charming: the weather
was breathtaking, there were miles of hiking trails, the beaches were
great for running, and there were a million things to do. I was paying
only $450 a month in rent and everything had the shine of newness to it.
Now, six years later, the town doesn't hold the same appeal. The
streets are congested and noisy with traffic, my rent is $900 per month,
homes which were once ridiculously priced have passed into
the ludicrous range, and the flavor of the town is one of materialism,
ostentation, and greed. As one friend pointed out: "you either own
the big house here or you're his gardener." I gave notice to my landlady
on 2003 Oct 14.
I undertook this trip as a fact-finding mission... to find a new
place to live. After considerable research (see research) into finding the perfect
place, I came up with about eight to ten cities in Arizona. As I
was driving, I came to the 89 S turn-off toward Prescott, took it
rather than continuing to Flagstaff, and now have an apartment waiting
for me in November.
Prescott is 415 miles from Santa Barbara, as the crow flies.
(Note: Not all of Santa Barbara is bad. I have met a lot of
great people who I will miss.)
