back to Black Canyon Trail
In Prescott, we don't have the Saguaro cactus. This cactus grows from sea level to
about 4,000', and Prescott is around 5,300'. Getting to the Black Canyon trail
requires a descent of several thousand feet, which has the added benefit of
warmer temperatures in the winter.
The Saguaro cactus has pleats, or ribs, and acts like an accordion, expanding with water consumption.
Our group moves on ahead while I take pictures. We started hiking in the shade, so
it was a little chilly, even though we were at a lower elevation.
The purpose of this hike was to get a feel for the Black Canyon trail. Dave had
not been here in three years, and a lot can happen to a trail in that amount of
time. Dave wants to ensure that the hike is do-able for the
Prescott Hiking Club.
Dave and Kern consider the which way to go.
The landscape in this portion of the Sonora desert is very different than that
of Prescott. Although it is winter, it is quite scenic.
This tiny cactus was nested in a tiny crevice of a boulder.
