Last weekend, Chris and I headed
to Sonora, Mexico for a bit of exploration. One highlight of the trip
was being turned back by a customs official because we didn't have a
vehicle permit. Apparently you don't need one until you go south of
Empalme, but the original customs official didn't make it clear that
we couldn't go further east than Cananea.
I've attached a few images. \Tone Disclaimer: If you would prefer not to receive these E-mails because the images are too large, or you just aren't interested, do let me know. ![]() An organ pipe cactus. These aren't extremely common in Tucson. ![]() You gotta love Mexico. Here the trash can is nearly full, but look down the hillside . . . . ![]() . . . roadsides in Mexico are literally dumps. ![]() This is a HUGE shrine. Notice the Mexican woman in the picture for scale. This shrine is to the Virgin Guadalupe. ![]() Driving back from Cananea, we saw this hole in the side of the mountain that we didn't see on the way in. We stopped to investigate. ![]() The mine went for hundreds of yards. I didn't do a full exploration. I thought I smelled guano. ![]() We made it to Bahia de Kino, which is on the Gulf of California. The beach had an abundance of seashells. ![]() In the distance is Isla Alcatraz. Isla Alcatraz lies within the Gulf of California Island Reserve and Wildlife and Migratory Bird Refuge (Island Reserve) administered by the Mexican national government. ![]() This is the sunset we saw on Saturday night. ![]() Jellyfish sort of look like snot. ![]() The beach has some very beautiful areas. Note the white houses in this stretch of beach. ![]() What a strange visage to see a doll's head on the beach. It's sort of freaky. ![]() Many of the beach-front homes used cacti instead of shrubs as their landscaping. This particular chain fruit cholla(?) was extremely abundant on appendages. ![]() Bougainvillea at one of the homes. ![]() Toward the marina were huge nests atop power poles. I got a picture of this largish bird as it was taking off. ![]() Chris and I climbed the volcanic peak between the marina and the city. This is the city of Bahia de Kino photographed as I hiked up. ![]() This is looking back over the mountain from whence we came. Note the blue, blue gulf. |
