Chinese coins
The Chinese began making metal coinage by the time of the Chou Dynasty (1027 - 256 B.C.). Some of the earliest metal coins were shaped like the shells what had previously been used for money. Others were shaped like knives, swords and spades. The most common coin was the "cash" which was round and had a square hole in the center. Cash were made of copper or a copper alloy and carried on strings of 500 or 1,000, called "Tiao".
