A side shot of the Big House.
After about two hours of checking out the visitor center and viewing the ruins,
we decided to head, again, toward our destination of Tucson. Along the way I
saw some mountains and wanted to see if we could get to them. There were dirt
roads, and since this was a rental car, why not?
Turned out these were just service roads to the aqueducts. I took this picture
of the sky reflected in the aqueduct.
Continuing to Tucson, we found Picacho Peak State Park. When my brother, Dick, and I
passed through this way in February of 2004, we stopped here but then decided not to
go in because there was a fee. This time, I went in.
The park ranger lady told us about the different hikes. She tried to dissuade us
from Picacho Peak itself because we didn't have gloves. Of course, that was the
only trail that interested me. We took Hunter Trail up.
Julie at the saddle of Picacho Peak. The valley below was quite impressive.
Continuing up the trail, Julie takes a rest. The hiking part was fairly easy,
but there were cables in two steep areas. The cables were a little rough on
the hands, but nothing we couldn't handle.
Julie at the top of Picacho Peak. There was a slight breeze at the top, and
the temperature wasn't too hot, so Julie covered up.
The highway is below. The larger building houses a knick-knack store and a
Dairy Queen. Julie and I didn't stop there, but I had already been there
with Mark and Dick in February.
