back to 2005 Mojave National Preserve
Tim and his fiancee Daniel had come to the Mojave National Preserve on previous trip where they
found mine shafts. Tim navigated me to the general area, and we hiked until we found the mines.
Tim investigates a mine shaft.
There is a ladder way down there, but I wouldn't want to fall in. I do think it would be cool to
check it out, though.
Unfortunately, the rangers are putting garish metal covers over the mines. I can see
their concern, but the desert isn't a place for the typical person. We don't need mother hen
protecting us from ourselves.
My camera sits atop the cover they put over this mine.
The picture features Tone and Tim with Soda Flats behind.
Tim told me about a horizontal mine that we eventually found. Tim had been there once
before, but chose not to go inside too far as he didn't have a light then. Fortunately,
I brought my hand light and a head lamp, so we decided to investigate.
Inside were rails for an ore(?) cart. I'm not really sure what they mined here.
There were two branch tunnels that were a few hundred feet long, but both dead ended.
The second one, however, had this rodent. Tim took a much better shot of it. It had babies!

Last day, April 11th, Tim and I finally do the full trail from Mid-Hills to Hole-in-the-Wall. I had
listed this as a possibility for the past several years, but there was always something else to do.
The trail is a little over eight miles. We shuttled cars so as to only do it one way, and set out
from Mid-Hills. The terrain was mostly downhill.
Tim grabs a trail guide created by an Eagle Scout.
A Painted Lady butterfly. I must have killed a hundred of these things against
my windshield. There were teams of them flying north as is their charter.
