The granite boulders spoke to me. They said, "climb me, climb me." So, I did.
Atop, I yelled "hey" then took this shot of David and Tina.
And a shot of Andi.
Mike and Taylor on a granite boulder with Cima Dome in the background.
Life in the desert is a fight for survival, as is evidenced by the twists and contortions of this tree.
As Jim Morrison once sang, and this tree takes no exception, "no one here gets out alive . . . ."
What sort of tree is it? A friend who works at the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens
sent me this E-mail response to my guess of a juniper tree:
"Dieter says you're probably correct, could be a dead Juniperus
occidentalis (western juniper)."
My confidence level is high; I believe anything from a man named Dieter.
Tina taking a picture of the above tree.
We returned to the vehicles, then went North to get gasoline. One must always be
aware of gasoline in the Preserve because of its vast size. Getting anywhere is
30 to 40 miles. Gasoline price: $2.99 / gallon. Ouch.
Later we split up. Tina, David, and I went to see the petroglyphs. On the short hike to the painted
rocks, I saw this desert horned lizard (a.k.a. horny toad). Joe, who went to see the petroglyphs with Bill the next day,
also saw a desert horned lizard. Was it the same one? We may never know.
Don't ruin the petroglyphs! In fact, the rangers won't even tell you where they are.
I found them because of David, and I think he heard about them from an instructor. I have the GPS
waypoint for their location, but I ain't telling where it is.
Tina is always taking pictures. Here she's taking a picture of a petroglyph. Note the large
barrel cactus off on the left.
Finally, here is a petroglyph. I took some thirty or forty shots of the petroglyphs at 5 MP resolution. I
am not including them all on this site. (There are many more at
my 2003 MNP trip.)
If you are interested in studying these petroglyphs, send me a message and we can discuss getting the images to you.
