back to 2004 Santa Barbara
The trip was supposed to start Tuesday night, the 14th of December, but my
flight was cancelled due to delays. Air travel and I just don't seem to
mix well. I went home, worked out, then went back to catch the first flight
on Wednesday morning. I got 1500 frequent flier miles out of the deal, but
they didn't quite offset the inconvenience.
Arriving in Santa Barbara, JD was there waiting for me at the airport. The
weather was fantastic! (This was right before the great rains that caused
so much damage.)
That evening, Jinxie, JD, Wedge, and I went hiking. We finally decided upon
Montecito Peak. Here is Mike just before the hike.
I had hoped Tim and George would be able to go hiking too, but Tim had
hurt his back, and George was in a bike accident.
Wedge and JD took off before us. Mike and I prepare for the hike.
A Santa Barbara sunset. My pictures rarely do these justice.

This was the first time I had been hiking on a "real" hike in months. Omaha
just doesn't have the kind of elevation to qualify as "real" hiking. Mike
and I started at a good clip, then Mike told me to go on ahead. JD and
Wedge were ahead of us—we could hear them citing Star Trek quotes. I
took off at top speed to catch up. I eventually found them at the eucalyptus
trees. Apparently they had only been there a few minutes.
Mike caught up within a few minutes and broke out the wine.
JD at the eucalyptus trees. You can see the lights of Santa Barbara to the right
of him.
Up at the eucalyptus trees. Yeah, their eyes are sort of funny in this shot.
