Hiking Trails
-
Mid Hills to Hole-in-the-Wall Trail.
This eight-mile trail (one-way) will take you through beautiful scenery, with numerous spectacular views of the mountains that surround the area. Among the plant communities you will walk through are pinyon pine and juniper woodlands, Great Basin sagebrush, blackbrush scrub and several cactus gardens. The trail has a 1,200-foot elevation loss from the Mid Hills trailhead to Hole-in-the-Wall Visitor Center, so if you like hiking downhill start at Mid Hills. The trail is signed, but it requires a good eye to stay on course as it enters and leaves washes. Shuttle vehicles can be parked at the Hole-in-the-Wall Visitor Center or Wild Horse Canyon Trailhead.
-
Teutonia Peak Trail, on Cima Dome.
The trail is about 4 miles round trip, and wanders through a wonderful Joshua tree forest.
-
To Kelso Dunes.
-
Caruthers Canyon.
-
Fort Paiute.
Campsites
I called the park service to ascertain our camping options
from the stance of night arrival on Friday.
There are two official campgrounds of 36 and 26 sites.
Merle the ranger said sites should be available at one
of these campgrounds for the first weekend in December.
These are for pay, and reservation are not an option.
There are also roadside campsites. We may use these
free of charge, but we cannot create a new one.
Merle suggested that these aren't too hard to find if
you are looking for one.
Our last possibility is backcountry camping, but we need
to hike 1/2 mile from any road and 1/4 mile from any
water source.
Apparently there are campsites available at Mitchell Caverns.
The price is $8.00; checkin 2:00pm; checkout 12:00pm.

Miscellaneous
Tone will be bringing his cell phone, car adapter, and has AAA coverage in case of emergency.
Desert nights get chilly; you may wish to bring thermals.
$1s and $5s are handy in case we camp in a pay site.
Fill up gasoline at Needles, Ludlow, or Baker before entering park.
