Detail
Mark R. drove us to Castle Crags in the trooper. We had
a bunch of liters of water and energy bars. I think Mark
and Lisa had apples. We were set for an adventure.
The climb started out fairly easy in a forest of trees.
The trail was easily discernable and the elevation wasn't
very steep at first. The weather was sunny and the
temperature was increasing. It was a good thing we
brought water.
Towards Castle Dome the trail ends. I saw the hiking poles
of the guys in front of me. I decided to continue up the
dome to see how far they made it. There was no path at this
point; climbing took both hands and feet at this point.
Eventually I met up with the two guys. They were brothers
named Larry and Spence. Spence showed me the way that
Larry had gone up and I ascended. Spence stayed behind.
Eventually I got up the summit of Castle Dome. Larry and
I chatted a bit about climbing Mount Shasta. It was he
who suggested the Northern side because "Avalanche Gulch"
didn't have enough snow to climb safely. Seemingly good
advice at the time.
We were all pretty tired at the end of the trip. We
considered stopping at the Black Bear Diner in Shasta
City for dinner, but the final consensus was to head
back to Cocpo House for dinner.
GPS Coordinates:
I have the GPS coordinates in my GPS. As soon as my broken
leg mends I may pull them out and put them on this page.
E-mail me if you want the coordinates sooner. That might
put a fire under my ass.

Why
Castle Crags is a really cool granite formation that we have seen
many times driving by. It was time to check it out.
