Review of [Podkayne of Mars]
| Title: | Podkayne of Mars |
| Author: | Robert A. Heinlein |
| Genre: | Science Fiction |
| Rating: | Poor |
| Review: | I've been reading / re-reading a lot of Heinlein books lately. This one I hadn't read before. I'm really beginning to sour on Heinlein's writing. Podkayne of Mars is a short adventure that is weak on characterization, weak on science, and rather weak on plot. The idea of having the story developed as a journal is interesting. The idea of natives on Mars and Venus leaves a bit to be desired. I guess this was supposed to be fantasy, and not sci fi? Interspersed through the book are scientific lectures on gravity, mass, etc. (why these treatises when he has children walking through the "bush" of Venus?) Also interspersed are little moralistic nuggets. The plotline is far from homogeneous. About 60% of the book builds up this fantasy vacation, then all of a sudden we are thrust headlong into turmoil. We don't hear any resolution of Girdie, Dexter, or the political dealings of Uncle Tom. |
