Austin — Whirlpool Cave Preserve

Summary

2005 Oct 11

The UT Grotto offers beginning cave tours. This particular night fourteen people met to check it out.

Whirlpool Cave was fairly easy to navigate, albeit crawling on hands and knees most of the way. There is one tight squeeze called the "birth canal" to make things interesting. It isn't, however, easy to wear a backpack. I needed to carry my pack by hand always placing it in front of me as I moved forward. As such, my camera wasn't always at the ready.

Whirlpool cave isn't bursting with cave formations, but there are some. The temperature in the cave was perhaps 72 F, but the humidity made it feel quite warmer.

We had a fun, enthusiastic group, and we were in the cave for around three hours.
