Tabasco Mexico

At least 50 caves have been found and surveyed by the project, and each year more caves are found due to the collaboration with the local people and the Sociedad Espeleológica de Tabasco, A.C. Some of the caves surveyed have archaeological remains that are documented and reported by the specialists in the group. As part of these exploration and survey efforts, several caves rich in sulfidic water have been found. The presence of sulfidic springs promotes the presence of abundant and highly diverse organisms, including bats, fish, insects and microbes, among others. In order to understand how the sulfidic caves are formed, the organisms living inside them, and their interactions, a multidisciplinary group was formed. This web page contains information about the main participants and some of the main results of their endeavors.

The best known of the sulfidic caves present in the area due to the conspicuous springs with high sulfide concentration, high biological diversity, and its size is Villa Luz Cave, locally known as Cueva de las Sardinas. Villa Luz Cave is located in the Villa Luz Park, near the town of Tapijulapa, Tacotalpa, Tabasco. Other caves with sulfidic springs in it are: Luna Azufre Cave, Susto Cave, La Joya Cave amongst others.
