Next Trip - Expedition #12

Thanksgiving 2011 — POSTPONED!

If interested in future trips, please E-mail me (Jim Kennedy) at .

We haven't been as aggressive lately about going to northern Mexico as in recent years, which is due mostly to the cartel violence that plagues the country. However, a couple of exploratory trips this past summer indicate that it is probably safe to return as long as we:

(1) drive only during the day,
(2) use the Laredo crossing and stay on main roads, and
(3) avoid Monterrey.

This year we will entering the mountains from the western side (from Saltillo and Arteaga) and staying in a cabin near the community of Laguna de Sanchez in Nuevo León, Mexico. We probably will not venture out to the La Camotera plateau this time, since the roads were so bad from Hurricane Alex last summer (see Matt's trip report!). We hope to map caves above the village that were discovered by the Monterrey Tec cavers a few years ago, as well as the caves that we know about near La Peñita. I'm not planning to run a big expedition this time, but am looking for 10-12 people that could go down for the entire time planned.

If we get the cabin, some folks will still need to sleep in tents outside. We will buy groceries for everyone and cook group meals, so all you need to bring, besides your own caving and camping gear, are your cave snacks. We will have a mix of returning veterans and first-timers.

Most of the caves in the Laguna de Sanchez area are relatively short but require vertical skills (SRT). The deepest known cave is only 79m. If you like camping, the high mountains of Mexico, virgin caves, survey, digging, and caver camaraderie, then you should consider signing up for this trip. More information, including photos and maps from previous trips, can be found on the project website:

Definitely look at the Frequently Asked Questions page. If you want to sign up or need more information, contact me (Jim Kennedy) at . We particularly need folks with adequate vehicles that can transport other participants. The trip is only a short time away, so make sure your passport is in order and let me know if you are interested.
